A&S Public Forum: Showdown in Germany: Resistance to the G8 Continues - Toronto April 19th

Public Forum: Showdown in Germany: Resistance to the G8 Continues
Thursday, April 19

Although the North American anti-globalization movement was displaced on the world stage by post-September 11 warmongering, the movement in Europe has continued to evolve and gain momentum.

This year, during the first week of June, the G8 leaders will meet for a nice cup of tea in the German resort of Heiligendamm, close to Rostock. To guarantee the security of their meeting, the superpowers will surround the resort with a 2-meter tall and 13-kilometer long security fence. The base of the fence will be sunk 1 meter deep into the ground. In total, they will invest 12.5 million Euros in barbed wire and cement.

The process of gentrification and racial cleansing taking place in New
Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is a brutal example of what
governments have in mind for poor communities here and across the
continent. The mass displacement of thousands of poor New Orleans
residents is mirrored in the demolition of Regent Park here in downtown
Toronto and in the social cleansing policies being passed by every level
of government.

Jan 15th David Rovics show a success!

TORONTO- On Thursday, January 15th, over 200 people packed the Parkdale Activity and Recreational Centre drop-in center to attend a fund-raiser organized by the group Autonomy & Solidarity. The event raised money for the Palestinian section of the group Defense of Children International, which focuses its work on supporting child Palestinian political prisoners. Wonderful and talented artists such as David Rovics, Greg MacPherson, and a host of musical performers from the drop-in center itself regaled the crowd to over three hours of fantastic music. A delicious hot meal was served to everybody in attendance, and the energy and good vibes of the center made it a welcome haven on one of the coldest days of the year.
