CALEDONIA (May 23, 2006)

Tensions that have simmered for weeks erupted full strength here yesterday as native and non-natives took to the streets en masse, at times by the thousands.

What appeared to start as a day of calm, quickly and dramatically took a turn for the worse. The dismantling of both the native and non-native barricades suddenly stopped and the confrontation turned to fists, obscenities and the entrenchment of both sides.

Argyle Street, the main highway through the small town, now has a deep trench across it, the tarmac crumbled in piles.
